Abuk-abuk Sago



Abuk-abuk Sago is chewy in texture. This traditional malay dessert is made with sago (main ingredient), gula melaka and grated coconut that is served during tea time or "jamuan".


Ingredients for Abuk-abuk Sago:
  • 3 cups sago
  • 8 oz. (259g.) grated coconut (use white flesh only)
  • pinch of salt
  • 6 oz. (185g.) gula melaka (crushed) + 6 Tbs. sugar - mixed
  • a few pandan leaves (lightly crushed)
  • 1/few drops green colouring
Method:
  1. Place sago in large sieve and wash well under running tap water. Drain well.
  2. Place sago in a bowl, add salt and grated coconut and mix well.
  3. Evenly spread half of the mixture into a shallow tray.
  4. Spread gula melaka mixture over.
  5. Colour the remaining sago mixture a light green. Spread mixture over gula melaka mixture.
  6. Place pandan leaves on top and steam 50 mins till sago turns transparent.
  7. Remove leaves and cool well before cutting into squares or diamond shapes to serve.
